Privacy
We collect as little as we can and we never sell it. This page explains what we hold and how to ask us to change it.
Who we are
Explore 62 is a local directory for the Langeberg and the R62. It is run by Henre Coetzee, who is also the information officer under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA).
The business is not registered yet. This page will be updated when it is.
What we collect
It depends on how you use the site.
- Business owners: what you enter on the listing form, such as the business name, what you offer, hours, phone and WhatsApp numbers, website, address (only if you have premises) and photos. This is shown on the site. Your own full name, email address and phone number are kept private, together with the dates you agreed.
- Business owners: a short note each time we contact you (the date, and whether it was by WhatsApp or email), so we do not message you too often.
- Anyone who writes to us: your name, email address and message, so we can reply.
- Anyone who suggests an edit to a listing: what you tell us. We do not ask who you are.
- Everyone: how often each listing is viewed, and how often its call, WhatsApp, directions, website and share buttons are tapped. These counts are not linked to you.
Why we use it
To publish listings and keep them accurate, to reply to messages, and to check suggestions and changes before anything on the site changes. We also use it to keep our forms free of spam.
When you list a business you also agree that we may contact you by email, phone or WhatsApp about your listing, promotions and paid services, and that we may add you to the Explore 62 WhatsApp group for local businesses. You can say no to this at any time (see Your rights).
We rely on your consent when you list a business or write to us, and on our interest in running a safe and accurate directory.
Visitors, location and cookies
- Near me: if you tap Near me, your phone shares its position with your browser so places can be sorted by distance. This happens on your phone. We do not receive or store your position.
- Cookies: we do not use advertising or tracking cookies. The only cookies are a small one that remembers the language you chose, and a sign-in cookie for the site administrator.
- On your device: the listing form saves what you have typed on your own phone, so you can finish later. Nothing in that draft is sent to us until you submit the form.
- Maps: Google Maps loads only when you tap to open a map. Google then receives details such as your internet address and device, under its own privacy policy.
- Spam checks: our forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell people from bots. To limit abuse we also keep a scrambled (hashed) version of your internet address for up to three days. We cannot turn it back into your address.
Who else handles it
We do not sell your information. Some of the services below keep data on servers outside South Africa. Each one only gets what it needs to do its job:
- Supabase: our database and photo storage.
- Vercel: website hosting.
- Cloudflare: spam checks on forms.
- Resend: sends us an email alert when something needs checking. The alert holds a business name and a link, never your personal details.
- Google: maps, only when you open one. Google (Gmail) also holds the emails you send to our contact address.
- WhatsApp (Meta): if you are in the Explore 62 WhatsApp group, the other members of the group can see your name and number.
How long we keep it
- A listing and the private details of its owner are kept while the business is listed. We delete them for good when the owner asks. If a listing has been hidden from the site for 12 months, we clear the owner's private details automatically.
- Messages sent through the contact page are deleted once we have dealt with them, and in any case after 90 days.
- Suggested edits and change requests are deleted 90 days after we have dealt with them. We do not ask who sends a suggested edit, so please do not put personal details in it.
- The record of when we contacted a business owner is deleted after 12 months.
- View and tap counts contain no personal details. We keep tap counts for 24 months to see how the directory is used.
Your rights
At any time you can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you
- correct it
- delete it, including removing your business listing
- stop using it, or withdraw the consent you gave
- stop promotional messages, or leave the Explore 62 WhatsApp group (business owners can do this themselves from their private link)
- You can also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa (inforegulator.org.za) if you think we have handled your information wrongly.
Children
Explore 62 is for businesses and for people looking for them. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
Changes to this page
If we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
